During the two weeks of Canada’s Tulip Festival in Ottawa millions of blooming tulips turn Canada’s capital city into a mosaic of colors. Plan a timeshare vacation for this year’s festival May 6-23, 2013.

Canada’s Tulip Festival has been celebrated since World War II as a symbolic representation of the friendship between Netherlands and Canada when Juliana, the queen of Netherlands, along with her children, took refuge in Canada.

At the end of the war 100,000 tulip bulbs were sent to Ottawa as a thank you gift from the Netherlands for the role played by the Canadian soldiers in its liberation.

Since then 10,000 tulip bulbs are sent every year to Ottawa by both the Dutch royal family and the International Flower Bulb Center.

Along with its historical importance Canada’s Tulip Festival is also celebrated in Celebrate, a forum for honoring the power of ideas, when celebrities and statesmen deliver lectures in Major’s Hill Park.

This festival of international friendship is also celebrated by over 20 embassies and international organizations that set up booths at in the blue-and-white striped International Pavilion tents.

You’ll see demonstrations of flowing Japanese calligraphy and exhibits of delicate Russian nesting dolls. Several traditional concerts are also performed by the international musicians at the Friendship Stage.

Ottawa reflects a variety of different cultures in its restaurants during the Canada’s Tulip Festival. In food stalls around the festival venue you can enjoy various lip smacking international flavors as well as Canadian cuisine.

Try the classic Quebecois dish of French fries, Ottawa’s own Beaver Tails (deep-fried dough covered in butter, sugar and cinnamon), and squeaky cheese curds in brown gravy.

Ottawa’s parliamentary buildings and monuments all become a part of Canada’s Tulip Festival, giving you even more reason to visit Canada’s capital city.
